In Judaism the matriarch figure is very important; if your mother is Jewish you technically are, but not if your father is. Although, if you don’t go to an orthodox synagogue only men can be rabbis…
Barmaid reminds me so much of Ms. Sara Bellum from The Powerpuff Girls. She is the faceless voice of reason and logic and secretary to the Mayor and advises him and the Girls in their adventures.

Correction to Ottebrain, sorry but that is not strictly true any more if it ever was. You can be Jewish with a Jewish father only, or even with not a Jewish relative in sight so long as you convert properly.
The State of Israel has loads of inclusive rules about this.
It’s nice to see a government being inclusive.
