Yep. It’s hard when you start losing your privileged status. I almost feel sorry for them.

  2. M27Holts says:

Unfortunately the religious POV is a lot more respected in 2022 than it was 40 years ago…The Dave Allan show would not be tolerated now…why religious people aren’t forced to paint their faces white and wear a red nose and baggy trousers with braces and two foot long shoes is a mystery to me…

  3. Oozoid says:

Alas, in much of the World, these still are ‘the days’ – to some extent, even in Britain. Not that I ‘believe’ in the efficacy of masks, but in god-adoring Scotland only the faithful have been given permission to ditch their masks from next week. Presumably their god will protect them or cure them, leaving the NHS available to those of us they infect after their congregating. (Maybe the church needs the business of a few extra burials.)
The BBC, in lieu of actual journalism, relies on CoE opinion:

One can almost sense the poor announcer’s embarrassment.

  4. M27Holts says:

Aye. Islamaphobia…who wouldn’t have a phobia against a 7th century warlords book of pure shite?

  5. arbeyu says:

@Oozoid. Actually, Scotland is the least religious country in the UK. And, unlike England, there isn’t an established religion. But the nationalist government does have a history of kowtowing to religion – I’m thinking of the HPV vaccine.

The health service wanted to give a leaflet to pupils getting the vaccine explaining that it did not protect against other STI or unwanted pregnancy. Roman Catholic faith schools threatened to bar the vaccination program from their schools because the leaflet “promoted sex outside of marriage”. The Scottish government gave in to the pressure, and the leaflet was withdrawn.

  6. Son of Glenner says:

Oozoid: Please do not slander my native country of Scotland by calling it god-adoring. A survey as recently as 2017 found that a majority of Scots – 58% -considered themselves as having no religion. We have only just had our census, a year late due to Covid, which did have a question about religion, with “no religion” as the first option. This may well show a further increase in unbelievers when the results come out.

Sadly, religion still has much privilege in the Scottish legal system and educational system.

Those were the days? These ARE the days QED=Teacher’s throat slit ‘after someone dreamed she’d insulted Prophet Muhammad’

As recently as 1987 when Bush allegedly stated “No, I don’t know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.”
In the USA it is still pretty much accepted that to run for a TEG / GOP election one has to be Christian.
In the UK Christian still wield tremendous power simply by virtue of being Christian. Apart from the Queen/Monarchy and Lords just look at Rees-Mogg et al.
Dearly beloved Al de Pf, a Roman Catholic creature of no morals, lies and little else, recently said ““Good evening ladies and gentlemen, or as Keir Starmer would put it, people who are assigned female or male at birth.”

This jibe at the leader of the opposition followed Starmer’s recent show of support for the trans community, as the Labour leader has repeatedly expressed his view that “trans women are women”.

SOG. I have been to a Celtic v Rangers game….secretarian hatred disguised as support for a footballl club. Aye man utd were the catholic team of manchester but utd/city is a purely a football hatred…nowt to do with religion…

  12. M27Holts says:

Meant secatarian hatred…images of office staff fighting on desks…monty pythanesque…

  13. Son of Glenner says:

M27Holts: Not all Scots, not even all Glaswegians, are bigoted Celtic or Rangers fans. The notorious feud is more a form of tribalism than religious observance.

  14. M27Holts says:

I suppose so. Although when I was implementing some software for Glasgow council in 1998 they were adamant that the religion field on clients was locked down to a very high priviledged account level only. They were very strict about who could see a persons religion. Not a single English council demanded that…however Belfast was even stricter…

M27Holts: Sadly, reality is more awful than I could ever imagine. I’m sorry that I had to look. A quick Giggle revealed dozens of links like the following…

  17. Succubus ov Satan says:

Thank you Lakabux – my bad for not checking the page yesterday

  18. Laripu says:

p, thank you for that link. It was an excellent read. I enjoyed it tremendously.

Since that was an essay by a Canadian novelist, I’ll return the favor with a skit by a Canadian comedy group I’ve liked for nearly forty years: https://youtu.be/sZqPQPhsuX4

    Enjoy!

We need a successor to Hitchens…who could step into those shoes? Ricky Gervais? Stephen Fry?

  20. Son of Glenner says:

Is that you offering your services, M27Holts?

  21. HaggisForBrains says:

    Thanks, Laripu, that was hilarious.

  22. M27Holts says:

SOG. I’m nowhere near as well-read as the Hitchster…Possibly better well read in terms of scientific literature but his vast historical bibliography and literary knowledge made him a far better advocate for atheism than I. Perhaps if I had a scottish wing-man…

  23. M27Holts says:

Yo Laripu, is it true that you can’t say “cunt” in Canada? I’ve often wondered if Kevin “Bloody” Wilson’s song was factuarily correct?

  24. James R. Baerg says:

Yes “cunt” seems to be a lot more offensive in Canada than in Britain.

  25. postdoggerel says:

Laripu, the Frantics clip was great. One of my favorite Canadians is Geoff Berner, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7noLzAiCVYM

  26. Dr John the Wipper says:

With “cunt” (kunt) forbidden, speaking Dutch becomes nearly impossible.

How often does one use the verb “can” in a day?

Transposing words from one language to another quite often leads to this.

I seem to remember the sensitivity in USA when a trade mission of (prime minister Wim) KOK and (postal service CEO Klaas) Dick visited.

Or the smirks of anglophones in finding the Austrian village of Fucking.

Or the Australian issue with German Helles (light colored beer, the most sold beer)

  27. Anonymous Austria Atheist says:

The austrian village decided in 2020 to revert to the older spelling Fugging, tired of replacing stolen street signs almost weekly. The local brewerie still produces and markets their “Fucking Hell” widely. tinyurl.com/2p8ucy6w
In that area you can walk in one day from Kissing through Petting to Fucking/Fugging

  28. Laripu says:

M27Holts, yes, it’s strange that English speaking countries assign different levels of offensiveness to the same words

In Canada “cunt” is considered much more offensive than it is in the UK. It’s rarely used. In the US, it’s considered to be even worse than it is in Canada: basically never used. You would shock people.

On the other hand, you can hear “fuck” and “shit” a lot in Canada. Also in the US, but less so. (Notwithstanding Will Smith at the Oscars.)

In Quebec, profanities are based on Catholicism. You’re likely to hear “Esti de calice de tabarnak!” which come from “hostie”=host, eucharist, “calice”=chalice and “tabernacle” which is exactly what you’d think. See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_French_profanity#List_of_common_sacres It’s really very colorful, and I get a kick out of hearing it.

  29. Laripu says:

postdoggerel, having lived in the US now for 25 years, I’ve missed a few things in Canada, and Geoff Berner is one of them. I’d never heard of him. That was funny. Thanks.

I chuckled at “Have you ever been in a Romanian hospital? It does not fill you with hope.”

There was an excellent radio series in Canada, now gone, called “This is That”. It was a fake radio interview and news-magazine show. They’d make up ridiculous stories and then the following week play telephone calls from outraged people that believed what they’d heard. I missed that too, but was able to download a number of shows as podcasts. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Is_That
